BEFORE AND AFTER

Central Park West Gut Renovation

Alexander's home had become overrun with mismatched bookcases. Every time he filled one, he bought another. But then they took over: on every wall, lined up as if for a mug shot.

The major engineering feat of this renovation was to replace a non-structural wall with an ingenious back-to-back bookcase. One side faces the bedroom while the other faces the living room, with a pocket door between them.

The bedroom was also reimagined as a library, with shelving on all four walls that create a cozy nest for the bed as well as built-in desk. Shelves were also added under and around all windows. The result is a clean-lined reorganization, in a deep neutral palette warmed by wood tones.
