BEFORE AND AFTER

Columbia Kitchen

The strategy with Susan's kitchen was to avoid triggering an expensive whole-house renovation. Her sun drenched apartment was charming, but after nearly 100 years of paint jobs and resanding, the floors and moldings showed their age. A shiny new kitchen would make the rest of the place look threadbare.

The solution was to make a fully functioning modern kitchen that looked like it had always been there. The cabinetmaker sourced reclaimed Douglas Fir that we distressed and stained to match Susan's antique sideboard. Seeded glass and and white "brick" splash tiles look vintage. Slate floors complement the dark counters. The fridge and microwave are hidden behind cabinetry, and the visor hood is so discreet you barely notice it.

Scroll for the transformation.
