BEFORE AND AFTER

Morningside Kitchen

When I met Cathy she already had dozens of suggested designs from friends and professionals. She didn't think any of them worked. Her kitchen renovation had been put off for years and at that point doors were literally hanging off cabinets, appliances had stopped working, and tiles were popping off the floor.

The ideal layout seemed obvious to me: move the sink and stove out of their cramped corners and swap the closet for a fridge. The next challenge was marrying Cathy's aesthetics with those of the person she's married to. He's an old-fashioned guy with a slew of inherited antiques, and she's a modernist. A palette of black, white and charcoal breathed new life into the brown furniture and worn plaster walls. The last fix was restoring amputated moldings and the old floors.
